Provide a short (no more than 750 word reflection) and respond to at least two other reflections.
As education evolves and technology becomes a bigger part of our daily experience, we have the opportunity to include these tools into our learning environment. Students with learning differences now have more than ever opportunities to access and be apart of the community. You may include connections to past experiences or future expectations, future goals or next steps, new or changed beliefs or ideas, ‘ah ha’ moments of new learning, etc.
Provide a short (no more than 750 word reflection) and respond to at least two other reflections.

Eleanor, Great response! I totally agree with how much knowledge we have required in this course. I actually found your presentation and website to be super helpful for learning about different technologies for young children with Down Syndrome. There are so many tools out there for all different types of people!

Great ideas Eleanor! I also really enjoyed the opportunity to learn about so many different types of assistive tech like you mentioned. I also agree with you how you said how empowered you feel as a future educator. I would also add that I feel empowered just as a regular person; assistive tech is such a niche area that so few people know about so we're now apart of the minority of people who are educated on assistive technology!

This experience has been very rewarding and educational. As I will be working with students who have dyslexia in the near future, it was great to put myself into the mindset of the educator already and create a platform that is filled with strategies and options for these specific students. After this experience, I believe Special Educators should begin creating websites such as this one for the variety of disabilities for the students in their school. That way they, and other teachers in the building have a list of useful links, references, and tools that are available to them in an accessible way.

Great points Austin! I agree that taking this course as the same time as our prac at the Cotting has been such a valuable experience. We're able to learn about the technologies that we see everyday there and are able to get a better understanding of their purpose and how they are used by our students.

Austin, I loved your response! I agree that teachers should have websites where they can connect and also that this class was very enjoyable. That is awesome that you were at the Cotting School where you were able to see technology being used. I am very excited for my prac setting.

Awesome ideas! I think it also would be great to create a website as a teacher. This way parents and others who are connected to our students are able to take things that students do in schools and implement it into the home life. Also this gives an insight to parents and guardians what they can do to help their student!

This course has been extremely helpful and has opened my eyes to the world of assistive tech and how transformative it can be for people with, and without disabilities. It has been great taking this course at the same time that I’m doing my practicum at the Cotting School. The Cotting is an amazing school full of assistive technology so through my experiences here, and in this course I feel very knowledgeable about an area I previously knew very little about.

With all kids learning different Assistive technology has given me more guidance and knowledge on how to be a more effective teacher for my students with or without disabilities. Throughout this class I have learned that about the wide variety of Assistive Technology that I never knew about before. In Children with Special Needs, I did my research paper on how assistive tech can help kids with language impairments, by doing this paper I thought I knew about all the different types of assistive tech being offered but I was wrong. During this class I learned about a lot more resources that will help my students and even myself at times. I learned about the different websites being offered to help teachers become more aware of their student’s disabilities. After taking this class I now understand how important it is to connect with other educators to learn about how they accommodate to certain students.

Hey Ash! I was, also, not in Prac this semester and I felt similarly about the timing of this class. I am really glad that I have this information prior to me entering the classroom and I am excited to see how we can implement it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this course and have learned a great deal about the various options of assistive technology that is out there in the world. Through my practicum experience at Perkins and job as a one-on-one para professional in a severe autism program I have gotten to witness a lot of assistive technology doing wonderful and powerful things for children with disabilities. I have seen people using technology to have a voice and express themselves through their fingers or their eyes, but I never realized that smaller things such as adaptive paper or a graphic organizer is considered to be assistive technology. This something new I learned through this class. There is a spectrum of assistive technology. It can something very simple such as larger text or something much more complex like an eye gaze which allows someone to talk through their eye movements.

I totally agree with you dom. It is amazing to see how assistive tech can bring such happiness and a feeling of belonging for some of these students. Its great to see students have full on conversations using their devices together. Just shows how important it is to give our students a voice

Technology is such a vital part of our every-day lives and it can be so crucial for those with all sorts of disabilities. It excites me how many doors the right assistive device can open for people with limited mobility, speech impediments, intellectual disabilities, etc. This class gave me many tools to apply when I am in the classroom, even if their financial situation does not allow for high-tech options. I am really grateful that I took this class before the merger, as BU does not have an explicit Assistive Tech class. The tools and resources and approaches that I learned can be applied to all students, even those without a documented disability, which gives me so much more to build my future inclusive classroom with.

This course has been one of the more rewarding courses that I have taken here at Wheelock. Being able to be in a class that has allowed for me to see what types of things really can help improve the quality of schooling and life in general of the kids that I want to work with was really great to be able to see. I have learned about this idea of Assistive Technology in other classes in brief segments throughout the entire class, but being able to have a class that really dives into not only physical things, but plans that can help a student move forward really will helped me in my current practicum, along with in my future jobs with teaching. Being able to learn how to create a case study that can help a student get the support that they need and what they deserve, along with learning about specific assistive technologies like an iPad with an app that allows for a student to have a voice or something just as simple as a grip on a pencil really engaged my learning and kept me interested throughout the entire class.

Ever since I got a cell phone I have seen technology as a huge part of my social life. It wasn't until high school where technology became a part of my academic life as well. However, the aspect of technology throughout my education has solely been for typing or completing assignments, doing research for a project, or creating a project for a class. This class truly opened up my eyes to see that technology is way more than that for some people and we should really take advantage of the world technology opens up for us within the education realm- and even outside of it.

It is quite amazing how much technology can affect a students learning experience. After this class, it truly has opened my eyes into the importance of incorporating technology into our classrooms. Assistive technology isn't just the technology everyone thinks of right away, it is having pencil grips for those with low muscle tone and can't properly hold a pencil, its increasing the size of texts for student who have low vision. There are a variety of assistive technologies that can be made with everyday things that can significantly improve the work and motivation a student has at school.
